This document aims to present, in a simplified manner, data regarding the implementation of the SDGs and sustainability among Portuguese SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises). The data presented is a compilation of the results from the Year 1 Report of the Observatory of the SDGs in Portuguese companies.
Based on the information collected throughout 2022, we can conclude that:
Despite the importance attributed to strategic alignment with sustainability, the implementation of the SDGs and sustainability in Portuguese SMEs is still in its early stages.
The level of knowledge of the SDGs, as well as the organisational strategies and practices developed by SMEs, shows that there are still significant opportunities for improvement in this area.
At a time when sustainability is becoming increasingly urgent, and the incorporation of environmental and social criteria into core business management is essential to maintain a company’s licence to operate, this document aims to be the starting point for raising awareness of the need for greater ambition and more effective practices in our small and medium-sized enterprises.
The SDGs most addressed by SMEs, the communication carried out, and the barriers identified as most relevant—such as the “lack of knowledge on how to operationalise”—open a clear path for the future: more implementation and more action. Portuguese SMEs, followed by large companies, will be the second line of response to the new sustainability requirements. We know they are not yet prepared, but it is the mission of the SDG Observatory to map the reality so that, together, we can work on solutions.
We look forward to a future of great prosperity for our Small and Medium-sized Enterprises. It is our mission to guide this path, supporting both theory and practice.
